In April 2020, at the height of the first wave of COVID-19 across Europe, academics at Alliance Manchester Business School and the Humanitarian and Conflict Response Institute at The University of Manchester launched The Manchester Briefing, a UK funded research project influencing global and local recovery and renewal strategies.

Rural entrepreneurship has the potential to drive innovations that can reduce poverty, increase access to food and create employment. For this to happen, actors in agri-food value chains need to trust each other. However, local agri-food value chains are almost always characterised by protectionist behaviour resulting in very high marketing costs and a stalemate, instead of by a drive for positive change and development. This course is focused on breaking the deadlock these value chains are in and hands you the tools to do that.

Trust among actors in agri-food chains is often not very high. This is caused by the low number of transactions between actors of agri-food value chains, the long distance between producer and end markets, and the general lack of understanding and, therefore, appreciation of each other’s roles. In these situations, all chain actors first of all try to protect their own interests as much as possible. As a result, opportunistic behaviour among chain actors is rampant, and cooperation virtually non-existent. The costs of marketing in these types of fresh produce chains are extremely high, resulting in a combination of very high price levels and very low margins at almost all levels of the chain.

Today, markets have become mainstream instruments for poverty reduction, smallholder inclusion and increased food & nutrition security. However, market dynamics, failures and shortcomings often diminish the desired impacts and/or long-term effects. This international course shows participants to which extent and in which manner markets can be used to induce and prolong positive change.

The Application Procedure

Technology Requirements Online Learning

Minimum technical and software requirements for online learning courses are:

The Sustainable Finance course is a 6-module online programme designed for managers and other staff who need to use financial skills in their work, but are not trained accountants. They may be working internationally in NGOs, government, UN agencies or private sector.

The course comprises of 6 modules which can be taken individually, or grouped together. Each module starts with the basics, and together they build a thorough working knowledge of financial management in international development organisations.

We use a mixture of interactive approaches. The online guided learning includes audio and video recordings with facilitator input and individual activities. Each module provides you with the practical skills not only to know how the numbers are calculated, but also how to use financial information and systems in decision-making.

You will learn to use the techniques in your own organisation and with partners, and so see better decision-making and programme impact. Each module includes a range of tools and materials to use in your organisation’s activities. When you complete 3 or more modules you will receive the book Building Financial Management Capacity for NGOs and Community Organisations, written by John Cammack.

Risk management practices are playing an increasingly important role in partner selection and engagement when NGOs receive funding from UN agencies or government donors. Join ICVA and PHAP for a webinar on 28 April, part of the Learning Series on Risk Management in Practice, where we will examine the role of risk management in good funding partnerships as NGOs engage with external funders.

For funders of humanitarian programming of NGOs, risk management is playing an increasing role in both the decision to offer funding and the terms and conditions of partnership once a grant is secured. Funding from UN agencies for NGO partners now includes an assessment of risk management practices in partner selection. Most also use a risk rating system with partners to determine funding limits and levels of required oversight.

Donor governments currently have a wider range of practice, some with extensive risk management systems in place. For NGO partners, there can be major consequences if donor government funding is accepted without a proper risk assessment being carried out. Accounting and compliance requirements for NGOs can be difficult to meet without appropriate training, and there are often serious legal consequences if the terms of funding agreements are not met.

The topics that we have covered so far in the risk management series have primarily focused on internal decision making and the role of risk management. It is important to extend this thinking, however, to external funding relationships. NGOs should be confident that they are basing the decision to accept funding taking into consideration key questions such as:

• Can we meet expectations of the funder?
• What is the likelihood that we can fulfill compliance requirements?
• Which risk controls are missing, or should be strengthened, to help meet expectations and compliance requirements?

As with our other webinars in the series, we will be joined by a panel of experts representing both NGO and funder perspectives, followed by a live discussion with participants.

The Summer School in Cinema, Human Rights and Advocacy is a training initiative, jointly developed by the Global Campus of Human Rights and Picture People, which will take place from 30 August to 8 September 2021.

This year the Summer School programme will be delivered in a blended format with online and in presence sessions in Venice Lido, Italy, both at the Global Campus and the Venice International Film Festival venues.

The Programme

The Summer School offers an exciting programme of lectures, film screenings, discussions, working groups and a storytelling workshop that combine human rights expertise, media studies and video advocacy strategies.

As part of the programme participants are required to watch and analyse a selection of human rights related screenings at the 78th Venice International Film Festival. Whenever possible, filmmakers, jury members and critics are invited to discuss their work with the Summer School participants. Participants will be given a Cinema category accreditation pass to the Film Festival giving access to a selection of festival screenings.

This year’s programme is focusing on ‘delivering social change to children and young people’ in the broader framework of human rights protection and promotion.

The Faculty

The faculty is composed by internationally acclaimed experts in film, television, photography and human rights working under the coordination of the two programme directors Nick Danziger, photographer and filmmaker, and Claudia Modonesi, human rights expert and media trainer, who will also conduct storytelling workshops throughout the whole duration of the school.
